Chapter 5

And seeing the multitudes of people, he went up into a mountain: and when he was settled, his disciples came unto him:
And he began to speak, and taught them, saying,
Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are they who mourn: for they shall be comforted.
Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness: for they shall be filled.
Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are you, when people shall criticize you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.
Rejoice, and be extremely glad: for your reward in heaven is great: for in the very same way they persecuted the prophets who came before you.
¶You are the salt of the earth: but if the salt has lost its flavour, what shall it be salted with? It is from then on good for nothing, but should be cast out and used as paths to be walked upon.
You are the light of the world. A city that is set upon an hill cannot be hid from sight.
Neither do people light a candle, and put it under a cover.  They put it on a candlestick and it gives light unto all who are in the house.
Let your light so shine for people that they may see the good that you do and glorify your Father who is in heaven.
¶Do not think that I have come to annul the Torah, or the Prophets: I am not come to annul, but to obey and do.
For I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth pass away, one yod or one crown of a letter shall in not possibly pass from the Torah, until all is obeyed and accomplished.
Whosoever therefore shall break one of the least of the commandments, and shall teach people to do so, they shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach all of them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
For I say unto you, unless your righteousness shall exceed [even] the righteousness of the scholars and Pharisees, you shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.
¶You have heard that it was said previously, You shall not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment:
And I say unto you, that whosoever is angry with his brother or sister without a [just] cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother or sister, Stupid, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, You utter fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.
Therefore if you bring your offering to the altar, and there remember that your brother or sister has something they are holding against you,
set your offering down before the altar, and go; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and present your offering.
Agree with your adversary quickly, while you are on the way with him [to court]; lest in due course your adversary delivers you to the judge, and the judge delivers you to the court officer, and you end up in prison.
I tell you the truth, you shall not come out from there by any means until you have paid the full debt.
¶You have heard that it was said previously, You shall not commit adultery:
And I say unto you, that whoever looks on a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart.
If your right eye causes you to commit an offense, pluck it out, and cast it from you: for it is profitable for you that one of the members of your body should perish, and your whole body should not be cast into hell.
And if your right hand causes you to commit an offense, cut it off, and cast it from you: for it is profitable for you that one of the members of your body should perish, and your whole body should not be cast into hell.
It has been said, Whoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a bill of divorce:
But I say unto you, that whoever shall put away his wife, except for the cause of unfaithfulness, causes her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced commits adultery.
¶Also, you have heard that it has been said before, You shall not break your word, but shall perform unto the Lord your oaths:
I say unto you, [guard yourself against this sin and] swear no oaths at all; neither by heaven; for it is God's throne:
Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King.
Do not even swear by your own head, because you cannot make one hair white or black.
But let your communication be, Yes, yes; No, no: for what is more than this results in evil.
¶You have heard that it has been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:
And I say unto you, do not resist evil: but whoever strikes you on your right cheek, turn to that person the other cheek also.
And if anyone will sue you in court, and take away your coat, let them have your second coat also.
And whoever shall compel you to go a mile, go with them two miles.
Give to whoever asks [anything] of you, and do not turn away from those who would borrow from you.
¶You have heard that it has been said, You shall love your neighbour, and hate your enemy.
I say unto you [now], love your enemies, bless them who curse you, do good to them who hate you, and pray for them who despitefully use you, and persecute you;
that you may be the children of your Father who is in heaven: for he makes his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.
For if you love them who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the politicians do the same?
And if you give recognition to your friends only, what do you do that is more than others? Do not even the politicians do so?
Be perfect therefore, even as your Father who is in heaven is perfect.
